A father and his teenage son have been rescued from a small island off Tasmania's coast more than 13 hours after they set off kayaking.
The pair went set from the South Esk River in Longford, Tasmania about 3.15pm yesterday, attempting to kayak to Hadspen, about 15km away.
A concerned family member reported them missing at 9pm after they did not arrive at Hadspen.
Police launched a ground and air search for the pair, while two surf livesavers were deployed into the river.
An unmanned police drone found them on a small island near Mill Dam at 1.20am, with the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Tasmania later confirming their location.
Heavy tree coverage on the island made it impossible for the chopper to land, prompting surf lifesavers to be deployed.
Incredible police and firefighter rescues
They were rescued at 4.30am today. They were not injured.
Tasmania Police said both were inexperienced kayakers and had not taken mobile phones with them.
Residents and travellers have been urged to be prepared when entering the water on any type of vessel.
